Almost everybody knows car- and motorcycle-racing. That’s where fast and exciting action is taking place. But the ultimate in racing is racing airplanes! If groups of pilots race close to ground level around a closed course in their planes, that´s not just a big challenge for everybody involved, but also a pleasure for eyes and ears of the spectators.
Air Racing - the fastest motorsport on earth.
There are not many places, where air racing took place so far. Since 1964 a special place was established: Reno, Nevada.

The Mil Mi-28 (NATO reporting name ‘Havoc’) is a Russian all-weather day-night military tandem two-seat anti-armour attack helicopter. It is a dedicated attack helicopter with no intended secondary transport capability, better optimized than the Mil Mi-24 for the anti-tank role. It carries a single gun in an undernose barbette, plus external loads carried on pylons beneath stub wings.

The Sukhoi Su-26 is a single-seater aerobatics plane from the former Soviet Union, powered by a single radial reciprocating engine. The Su-26 has mid-mounted straight wings and fixed landing gear, the main gear mounted on a solid titanium arc.

The Sukhoi Su-26 made its first flight in June 1984, the original four having a two-bladed prop. The production switched to the Su-26M, with refined tail surfaces and a 3-bladed Hoffman prop. Further refinements were made, and the model won both the men’s and women’s team prizes at the 1986 World Aerobatics Championships. The modified Su-26M3 with the new M9F 430-hp engine dominated the 2003 and 2005 Aerobatic World Championships as well as the 2004 European Championships. It was exported to Argentina in the 1990s.

The Eurocopter EC 725 five bladed version of the Cougar was developed to meet a French Air Force requirement for a specialist helicopter for Combat Search & Rescue operations, and is similar to the civilian EC 225. Introduced in 2005, the EC725 has seen combat service worldwide, including in Afghanistan.

The Messerschmitt Bf 108 Taifun was a single-engined sports and touring aircraft developed by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke.
Design and development
The A version first flew in 1934, followed by the B version in 1935. The B version used the Argus As 10 inverted Vee, air cooled engine. The nickname Taifun (German for “typhoon”) was given to the aircraft by German aviatrix Elly Beinhorn, the second woman to fly solo around the world.
Production of the Bf 108 was transferred to occupied France during World War II and production continued after the war as the Nord 1000 Pingouin.
World War 2 Role
The Bf 108 was adopted into Luftwaffe service during World War II, where it was primarily used as a personnel transport and liaison aircraft.

The Blohm & Voss BV 222 Wiking (Viking) was a large German flying boat of World War II.
The BV 222 Wiking six-engined flying boat was originally ordered in September 1937 by Deutsche Lufthansa as a civil flying boat, but was quickly taken over as a military transport. A dorsal gun turret was added behind the cockpit. Rearward facing machine gun turrets were added on both wings. Access in flight through the wing was via a tubular wing spar of a metre in diameter. Engineers could also reach the two stroke diesel engines in flight via the same spar.
Originally the type was powered by Bramo 323 “Fafnir” radial engines. Later aircraft were powered by six 1,000 hp Jumo 207C inline diesel engines. The use of diesel engines permitted refueling at sea by U-boats. The BV 222C-13 aircraft was a sole example fitted with Jumo 205C engines and later Jumo 205D.
The type was noted for a long flat floor inside the cabin and a large square cargo door aft of the wing on the starboard side. The flat floor was a welcome novelty for that era. Only thirteen aircraft were thought to have been completed. Early aircraft were identified as V1 to V8. Production examples were designated C-09 to C-13.
